Cost a lot coffee.

Dear reader,

Hello and welcome to my new followers, Thrift Deluxe, Jo, Jules Boult and Greenflag. Thank you so much for joining me.

As you know I am on a diet. I want to lose 3 stone and have put up a progress bar to measure my loss.
I'm also hoping that by showing you, it will motivate me a bit more.
I have been a good girl. I am starting the day mostly with porridge but today I made sweetcorn fritters with two poached eggs. I use the spray oil now for frying anything. Then it's been a substantial salad, chicken or mackerel. Tonight I cooked a butternut squash and chickpea curry with boiled rice. Very tasty, very filling and cheap too. I mixed up some plain yogurt with a little mint sauce and chopped onion as a raita too.

I am trying to get out in my lunch break for a walk, just 15-20 mins which is more than I did before. I strolled up the high street today and noticed that the only busy shops were the coffee shops. Many of these have sprung up all over the UK and people don't mind spending £2-£3 on a drink. I was surprised. We are just managing on two decent salaries and I can tell you we don't go mad on food shopping or anything really.

I heard on the radio tonight that you know you are successful if you have a 50" TV and shop at Waitrose or Marks and Spencer. I did laugh. I think you are successful if you can run a home, feed you family and get rid of debts, that's what we are aiming for.
I had my £4.50 M&S bra on though-does that count?

Have a nice evening.

  1. We only drink posh coffee as a treat. We shared 2 recently, one on our way down to Cornwall and one on the way back.

What we noticed? We bought a large Laite for £3.70 so once shared (ample for each of us) it cost £1.85. The cost of a small one £2.99 which is absolutely bonkers! Infact buying such coffee regularly is bonkers.

Normally we drink 'proper' coffee using our 35p coffee from Approved Foods. It's delicious.

    1. Hi SFT, what a good idea to share one, as you say, the cost of a small one is silly. Your holiday looked really good, we are planning a similar one. AF is great for treats.

  2. Hi,
I must admit that before I started counting the pennies I loved a nice coffee and would have one every saturday and usually a couple of times in the week. Doubled as hubby likes one too it was running into a small fortune, about £60 a month. Doesn't seem much when its just £5 z time for a couple of coffees but when you add it up it does make you realise what an absolute waste of money it is. Well dont for starting your diet. I diet too and know how hard it is. Keep up the good work. Jules x

    1. Hi Jules,

It's the little things that really add up isn't it? A sandwich here, coffee there, a packet of crisps. I can't believe the amount I used to spend on cigarettes. Aaaahhhh, I could have bought an Aston Martin! Oh well, at least we are all trying now.
Thanks for joining and commenting, I love to get the comments.
All the best with your diet too.

  3. Well done for being good. Love the sound of that curry, I love both these ingredients but hubby does not, therefore not eaten here!! Just to make you feel better - we do not have a TV at all and the only shopping we do at M&S is socks for hubby once a year with gifted voucher, and pants that he bought one year that were too big so I am wearing them!! I never understand why coffee shops are so popular - my last office job was in retail and the shop assistants were not that well paid, but all went out to C***a every day for coffee (we had nice filter coffee upstairs in the office) Keep up the good work - you will soon be filling in your progress bar. x

    1. Hi Alison,

Mine isn't keen on the chickpeas either but loves hummus! I love that you are up cycling his pants. They reckon men's last a lot longer than women's anyway. I agree, these coffee shops are packed, I think it's a bit of a status thing. Weird, what a waste of money.
Thanks for popping in and commenting.
      All the best,

  4. I very much enjoy how people make a link between the size of a telly and various things. Last night on the radio someone said if your tv set is bigger then your bookcase then you're obviously working class.

I have a massive bookcase but rarely look at the books on it, a small telly I watch a fair bit, shop at Waitrose and M&S fairly frequently. It doesn't say anything about me, my social class or my world view. I'm not defined by what I buy or where it comes from, it says those places are easy for me to nip in to when I want a particular item.

People say a lot of things about a lot of things that are either meaningless, nothing to do with them or both. I fall into the latter category.

    1. Ha ha, your comment did make me laugh about the tv size and the bookcase. We read a lot but we do watch quite a lot of TV. I had to buy a pair of smart jeans recently and got a really good fitting pair for £12.50. Where? M & S.

      Thanks for an interesting comment.

  5. I cringe when I think about how much I spent each day when I worked. I bought 2 coffees every day (didn't help there were 3 coffee shops next door to the office) and that was just to get me going in the morning - never mind my morning break and lunch times!

Going for a walk during lunch is a good idea. Helps the mind as well as the body when you're stuck indoors for most of the day I think.

Good luck on your weight loss.

    1. Hi Sara,

I cringe when I think of the £7 a day that I used to let go up in smoke! I could also pop out for lunch on top of that. Posh sandwich, crisps, drink and perhaps a little something sweet, another £7 easily.
Getting out even for a few mins does clear the mind. Glad you've kicked the caffeine

  6. We do love a nice coffee and invested in a Senseo machine when Amaz0n had them on half price offer, however we buy Lidl pods they are so much cheaper and the taste and quality is just the same. When we go to music festivals we use an insulated cup and take our own coffee or hot chocolate into the concerts, it saves a fortune.

Well done with the diet so far, and for getting motivated, I think you are so brave making all these life changes in one go.

    1. Hi Karen,

I love Lidl for most things and always spend less there than anywhere else.
I bet they rip you off at festivals for food and drink. I feel much more motivated since stopping smoking and more energetic, it's weird. I am quite enjoying the healthy eating so far. Had a few treats yesterday but I don't want to feel deprived and then go mad.
I'd be at your door for a pie or five!

    2. If you don't have those little treats, whether you are losing weight or money saving, you will go mad. We've all been there and having a little something is the only way to keep going!
