Keep them out.

Dear reader,

This is a little off the mark for a frugal blog but I would love this to be passed on and it could ultimately save someone a lot of money and heartache.

Many people have UPVC front doors to their homes and you can lock these by lifting the handle which moves the bolts across and locks the door.

Thousands of burglaries are because burglars can easily insert a homemade tool through the letterbox and lift the handle thus releasing the bolts and allowing them to enter. We know this because burglars have said so.
So many homeowners think their home is secure because they have lifted the handle.

This is not the case, the front door should always be locked with a key.

Please pass this on and tell elderly relatives they must not open the door to anyone regardless of having lost their dog, car broken down, they have a water leak, their roof is damaged or many other excuses.

Be safe, be savvy and be alert.

Much love. X

  1. I keep telling my Mum not to open the door to people, particularly at night or when it's dark early in Winter, but she keeps doing it. I'm the only visitor she gets and I let her know when I'm going if it's outside my normal pattern, but she still does it. It makes me want to scream at times! She is very good at keeping the doors locked, even when she is working outside in the garden, but it's the answering the door thing that I just don't seem able to get through to her.

    1. Oh please keep on at her, there are so many burglars out there who pretend to be police, water board etc just to get in. Hundreds every day.

  2. We are good at keeping the doors locked, even if we go down to the bottom of the garden we lock the conservatory door and take the keys, it does have the shed key attatched so its easy to remember. We have had a few burglaries round about and because we live next to open fields we tend to be extra vigilant. Mum and dad have git into the habit if keeping themselves locked in too after having druggies living next door, sometimes when we visit its like grtting into fort knox!!

    1. Sadly I didn't notice! We never open the door to anyone. If its the meter man I just tell him we will send him the reading.

  4. A good reminder, it's so easy to do just lift the handle and walk away :-(

  5. Can't imagine why anyone thinks that would lock the door. We have to lift the handle up to slide the bolts across but if the handle is pushed down without the door being locked, it opens again. Mind you, I once walked around to the shops and left the key in the outside of the door:) All doors and windows are kept locked, especially if we are going to be out in the garden.

    1. People lift the handle which slides the bolts across and you can't open the door from outside only the inside so they just go via the letterbox.
