Dear reader,
I was hoping for another sunny ish day today. Have woken up to drizzle and grey skies. So glad I got my major washing done and on the line yesterday.
I was up early again (it is for me) at 0630 and was hoovering by 7. Oh what a domestic goddess.
I sometimes just get the urge to clean and have definately got more energy since stopping smoking.
Started sweeping the hallway and hoovered the rug, both sides. Then took that up and cleaned the floor. I like to clean it by hand and do a little bit and then dry it as I go so there are no smears or smudges. I had thrown out an old sweatshirt yesterday, it was just so old and manky I didn't t even fancy wearing it for dog walking! It made good cloths though. When I clean floors I like to put a bit of fabric conditioner on the cloth just for the smell. We have a heated floor in the bathroom and it makes the smell rise and go through the house. I know some of you frugalers use vinegar as softener but I have to admit I love conditioner but do use it sparingly.
I washed and dried the hall then did the bathroom floor. I cleaned all the bathroom and polished the shower and taps with another bit of sweatshirt and dried all round it. There's nothing like getting under the bowl first thing in the morning to wake you is there? Lovely! Needs must.
I dusted everything in the lounge and wiped every slat in my blinds. We have white wooden blinds in the lounge but they do get dusty and it's a long and boring job. I think the log burner gives out a bit of dust from the ashes.
Another lot of washing in and this will have to go on the indoor drier and in front of the fire later when BM lights it.
I then did a stock take of the fridge and freezer and decided on a meal plan for the week. All cooked to diet plan.
Monday (yesterday) homemade beef burgers with sweet potato chips and salad. BM had has with cheese, mushroom and topped with a fried egg on each. No bread rolls though.
Tuesday spicy chicken noodle soup to start followed by chicken and veg curry and rice. Leftovers for work.
Wednesday Thai noodles with shredded chicken and stir fry veg
Thursday beef stew in the slow cooker with potato and sweet potato mash and veg.
Friday all day breakfast- eggs, veggie sausages, mushroom, tomatoes.
Saturday jacket potatoes, beans, cheese and salad.
Sunday roast chicken, veg and potatoes.
Am hoping for a good weight loss this week. My weakness is crisps and salty snacks. I love any kind of crisps, especially the posh thick ones, salt and vinegar.
There is an article today all about how crisps are making us all fat! They say lots of children have a packet every day and the fat in them is horrendous. We become addicted to them because of the salt.
The manufactures have even worked out the loudness of the crunch we prefer and at what poundage our bite should be before the crisp breaks. That amount of research just shows how much money they must be making on them. I was never allowed a packet a day as a child, maybe one or two a week.
I remember after having my dinner there was not often a pudding or sweet in our house. There was however a huge fruit bowl and I was told that if I was still hungry to have an apple.
There were nowhere the amount of ast food places in the 70's. There was a KFC and the Wimpy Bar
As we called it then. Perhaps fish and chips too. I don't remember seeing many fat kids either.
How times have changed.
The whole high street where I work is full of fast food shops. There's 2 KFC, 2 Subway, Pizza Hut restaurant and delivery shops, 2 kebab shops as well as loads of chain restaurants, Nanados, Ask, Prezzo, Pizza Express, Auberge, Bella Italia. Wow that's a lot of food.
We don't eat out very often now. It just costs so much. What's a meal for two now and a couple of drinks? £50 at least! I can get loads of shopping for that and I know what's in it (well, I hope so)
What do you think, are there too many food outlets now? Is this making us fat?
Let me know your thoughts.
All the best for today

I don't remember many food outlets, Wimpy and Fish and chips were all and even then you sat down to eat if you did not take it home to eat. I was taught that eating in the street was rude. I still don't do it now!
ReplyDeleteMe neither. My mother wouldn't allow it then and she wouldn't like it now!
Delete"People swigging from cans" she says even if someone is drinking. I like the sportswear wearing people shovelling in cakes outside Greggs the best!
When I was little McDonalds was SUCH a huge treat! Now my boyfriend likes to go in a fair amount if we're on our way somewhere. I think it's almost habit, because he wants to do it even if I've made something at home! We don't get takeaways very often. Normally fish and chips if we do :-) by the sea is the BEST! I do think it's too cheap and too easy on the high street (I know cheaper to cook at home, but when you're out you think hmmm, burger 99p ain't too bad!!)
ReplyDeleteAlso I've just realised you've replied to all my comments :-) thank you! I do enjoy reading your blog!
Jo :-)
Hi Jo,
DeleteI decided that when I started this blog, I would reply to every comment. I leave a lot of comments on other blogs and its so nice when you get a reply as you know they've read it. I love getting comments and the least I can do is reply.
I know how it is on the high street, so easy to just grab something. I am partial to a mcmuffin for breakfast or the pancakes but I was getting so greedy that one day I had both. There's nothing like fish and chips in really finger soaked paper looking over the waves. We love that when we go to my mums on the coast. I always think if its 99p then it's probably only cost them about 10p or less so what on earth is in it? But when your hungry.....it's soooooo gooood.

That's a really nice thing to do :-)
DeleteThey always use to say McDonalds milkshake had potato in to thicken it.... But I suspect that's really the least of things to worry about!
Jo :-)
A frugal lady and her husband are shopping in Wycombe ASDA.
ReplyDeleteThe husband picks up a case of Guinness and puts it in their trolley.
'What do you think you're doing?' asks the wife.
'They're on sale, only £10 for 18 cans he replies.
'Put them back, we can't afford them' demands the wife, and so they carry on shopping.
A few aisles further on along the woman picks up a £20 jar of face
cream and puts it in the basket.
'What do you think you're doing?' asks the husband.
'It’s my face cream. It makes me look beautiful,' replies the wife.
Her husband retorts: 'So does 18 cans of Guinness, and it's only half the price!'
He's now in Wycombe Hospital.
Ha ha ha ,very good.
DeleteHa,ha...yes it was only a joke. I thought after I had posted it -
Delete"I do hope Sarah realizes it was nothing personal". :)
But back to fast food. Except, perhaps on holiday, I never touch it. In most cases you just do not know what is in it.
A pie covers up all sorts of nasties under its pastry top.
Even a good make from Marks can contain more filler, gravy and vegetables than meat. I remember years ago having Chinese sweet & sour, which turned out to be chunks of fat coated in batter! I'm not into ready-meals either. One look on the back at the ingredients, puts me off.
All those chemicals, (European) E-numbers, additives, preservatives etc. really put me off. I'm a wee bit asthmatic and have to check labels for sulphites and sulphates and similar nasties - so it's a 'NO' to chemicals in my food.
Mind you I like a Guinness or two with my Pork Scratchings!
Cheers....B
Pork scratchings and Guiness! A powerful and heady mix I am sure.
DeleteI do like a pork scratching but always pick the one with the hair still on it.
Oh I never thought the joke was personal, don't worry.
Well done for all your cleaning. Good to hear you have more energy now. And well done for still not smoking. That's incredible!
ReplyDeleteMeal planning looks good too.
Yes, there weren't many fat kids around when I was a child either.
Sft x
Hi SFT,
DeleteGlad you said the same about the fat kids, I thought it was just me but honestly there weren't. We were all out on our bikes, over the fields or skipping, playing marbles all outdoor stuff. I see my friends children and they sit playing computer games. One even had the headphones and microphone like a pilot so he can talk to his friends while they play. How times have changed.

Crisps are definitely my weakness - I'm not fussy, as long as they're crisps I'll be sure to love them!
ReplyDeleteAlthough they're only toddlers I've noticed a difference in my 2 with their little faces getting that we bit chubbier over winter. I think it's down to less outdoor play time and my oldest developing a love of TV and playing games on the tablet... as soon as the sun comes out the doors are opened and off they go out to play.
It was my little Master's birthday at the start of the week and as a treat we went to a KFC at the weekend. Whilst Miss had already eaten, she was given the choice of some chips to make her feel part of the treat and she didn't want them - here's hoping she'll turn her nose up at processed foods for a while yet! The Master was pleased with his treat, but those types of occasions will only come once a year.
KFC was the only treat I had as a "take away" when I was a child. It was very basic then. Chicken and chips but you did get a hat like the Colonel wore.
DeleteThe trouble is, it does taste good!
FIB. X
Me too (other than a stop off at a Little Chef on travels when we were going on holiday!)
DeleteWhen you can put out a meal plan like yours you would find most take away meals very disappointing. We were treated to dinner in a fairly posh place a while ago. There was nothing on the menu that I could not cook. We all ordered different meals intending to do a bit of swapping, I chose guinea fowl wrapped in parma ham. The portions were so tiny that almost 4 bites and they were gone. My "roast potatoes" were almost as big as my thumbs and there were two of them. Our hosts were gutted, when we got home it was cheese on toast all round. never again.
ReplyDeleteHi Pam,
DeleteAm really enjoying your blog and thank you for popping in here.
Eating out can be a bit of a swizz. I was treated to a very posh meal a couple of years ago and ordered the scallops. Note the plural. When it arrived, yes it, they had got one and sliced it in half! A roastie has got to be a proper roastie!
FIB. X
I agree with you Pam. When I go out I like to try something I wouldn't or couldn't make myself, otherwise I just think about the mark up in price!
DeleteGosh you have been busy! I bet you slept well that night. Well done on not smoking, you should feel very proud of yourself for stopping. Especially all the money saved too
ReplyDeletex
Thank you Mrs no spend. I don't even think about smoking anymore. Weird how I did it for all those years.
DeleteOh I did sleep well.
Am hoping to see the extra money soon but it just seems to be swallowed up.
Thanks for popping by.

OMG I just bought 48 packets of crisps LOL they will last us ages though. Blimey Wimpey Bars.. those round sausages with the slits in the top :-) Fish and chips used to be a cheap meal for saturday lunch time but not any more, can't hack the grease nowadays. They don't taste the same without the newsprint on the chips!!
ReplyDeleteIf we have any fast food while in the shopping centre say we go for a Subway meal deal... Spicy Italian and the works...yum.. usually £6 for 2 but its been a while since the last ones.
Years ago the kids presuaded hubby to take them to Mc Donalds drive in and they nearly wet themselves laughing when he parked up in the car park and got out to go and order LOL
Ah yes the round slitty sausages and coca cola floats. They used to do a donut thing with ice cream too, not that I sampled the whole menu!
DeleteYes what's with the grease, it actually drips off, yuk. All batter and not much fish either.
Ah bless the hubby. Imagine a drive thru in our day, who would have thought it!
