Money up in smoke

Good morning dear reader,

My welcomes first to two new followers, Stretching the pennies to save the pounds and pretty vintage roses. May our journeys together be interesting, supportive and fun.

As you know, because I mention it a lot, Big Man and I were both, until recently smokers. Actually, 20 a day each, smokers. I guess that's classed as heavy smokers?

I have been smoking since I was about 16. It started at school with copying the other, naughty but therefore cooler, (or so i thought) kids in my year. My parents had had a very nasty divorce and I am an only child. I suppose it was my way of fitting in, showing I was one of them.
It was still unusual to be a child of a "broken family" as they called it then.
My father had been a domineering bully all my life and hated smoking (despite being one himself when younger) I think this was my way of putting two fingers up to him.

I continued, trying to be cool behind the bike sheds until it had taken a grip. I remember when they were a pound a packet. I used to go to the local school disco, lipgloss and my 10 Silk Cut. I was in the "in crowd" and it felt great.

My life continued, getting a job, socialising, boyfriends, holidays abroad. All the time my little friends came with me. A messy marriage and divorce of my own, they were always there, comforting me, giving me something to do when I was very low.
I knew it was bad for me, I coughed, I wheezed, I found it difficult to run. I tried the patches, hypnosis at £300 a go, twice! Sprays, fake cigarettes-they were good but too close to the real thing.
My mum begged me to stop, still I continued.

As you know, I read a lot of blogs and value what you say. I have learnt a lot from you and I started changing my life when I found these frugal bloggers. It began with SFT, saving for travel who has paid off her mortgage while still travelling to wonderful places. I then found the two Queens, Mean and Frugal.  These three ladies really got me thinking about what I do with my money. I work hard to get it, as we all do and these blogs really made me watch where it was going.

I started to begrudge spending the money on smoking, on something that was killing us. There was no point, saving, scrimping and trying to,pay off our mortgage because we probably wouldn't be around long enough to enjoy it. We knew we wanted to stop but it was always tomorrow.
£400 a month we were smoking! I used the mortgage overpayment calculator and if we paid this off our mortgage it saves us about 8 years.

About 2 days later, Mean Queen did a whole post on not smoking. I read it and watched some clips she had added. I showed it to the Big Man who did the same.
I'm not sure if it was seeing it printed or the clips or that is was within my precious blogging community but we have stopped. Cold Turkey!

I want to say a huge thank you to Ilona at Mean Queen and also to SFT who always makes time to send me supportive comments and ideas and to all of you who drop in, leave a comment or follow this blog. It keeps me strong and committed.

We save this £100 each week.

Wow.

    1. Oh please do Jennifer, I was a serious smoker, really enjoyed it. There are no benefits to smoking only to quitting. You will be doing your health and your purse so much good. I never realised how awful I smelt either!
Please let me know if you decide to stop, we could be motivational buddies.
Have you watched Alan Carr on you tube?
The old guy not the comedian.
Good luck to you, it's the best thing you can do.

    1. You are so right. You have to get in the right frame of mind too, it's no good if your hearts not in it. Must crack on with dieting next, now that is something I enjoy. The eating, not the dieting!
      Thanks for your support.

  4. A relative of mine smokes in excess of 80 cigarettes a day but also pleads poverty. He moans that everything else is expensive in life but does not seem to notice the money he spends on the 2500 cigarettes he gets through each month !! Each to their own I suppose. Congratulations on giving up. I wish you well xx

    1. Oh wow, that's a lot of smoking going on. I walked past someone yesterday who had obviously just had a cigarette, my god, the stench. I actually nearly gagged. That used to be me!
Glad to see you on your blog yesterday. I always look out for you.

      Love

  5. Well Done and keep it up. I also tried many times before giving up my 30 a day 33 year habit and finally managed it after watching my Mum die from the effects of smoking. Really proud of you, and any time the lack of a fag gets you low...just remember we're all here willing you to succeed :-) Sending you all of my calm and mellow wishes :-)

  6. Well done to both of you its a brilliant achievement and if it helps clear the mortgage quicker so much the better. As Kitty says, we are all here to give help and support. Just imagine drawing £100 from the bank machine and setting fire to it in the street :-( Then instead think about putting it towards being debt free and that will really put a smile back on your face and increase your willpower :-) You are both doing so well I'm very proud of you.

    1. Hi Karen,

I always look forward to getting a comment from you as you give such good advice. I can't believe the money I've spent burning a little paper wrapped stick and sucking in the stinking smoke. Eeuuugghhkk.
The blogging support is so, so,helpful.
      Thank you.

  7. Really well done - its not an easy thing to do and your doing so well - thats a brilliant achievement - wish I could do the same with food and loose some more weight - which do you think is the hardest to give up cigarettes or nice food? xxx

    1. Hi Trudie,

Without a doubt, the cigarettes are harder. The food just takes so,e time and effort in making better choices and small changes. I sound like an expert don't I? I know how easy it is to say but harder to put into action. I am going to rejoin a slimming club. I like slimming world as I can eat a lot without weighing and still have a few treats.
You can do anything, if you really want to.
      Am sending positive thoughts.......

  8. http://www.dollartimes.com/on-your-site/progress-bar.htm

I really like these progress bars Sarah.

Set yourself a goal, starting and goal amount-using £ instead of $ and choose a colour.

Then copy your code into layout

To add a gadget and paste it into HTML/Java Script (3rd Party).

I used this for paying off my mortgage.

Also for saving up for holidays.

I really wish you the best of luck Sarah, you've got some lovely followers now and seem really motivated.

    1. Hi Justine,

Best thing we've done, it is difficult and there are times I really want one and just have to do something else. Blogging is a great help because I can just go and read someone's blog instead, it takes my mind off it.
      Thanks for your support.
