Is there really a recession?

Dear reader,

Welcome to a new follower, Cheap Chick-great name!

I want to know if there really is a recession? Are people hard up? We hear a lot about small companies struggling, the loss of our high streets, self employed people losing their houses.
I'm sure this is the case but listen to this.

Big man and I bought our home last February. It needed a lot of work as it hadn't really been touched since the sixties and we had the stone clad fireplace to prove it!

Some of the work Big Man did but some needed specialists.
We wanted to use local tradesmen or try to and we like to support small companies and self employed people earning a living. I'm sure we all do the same with shops and the like.

Below is a list of the jobs that we wanted doing and the responses we got.

Plans for upstairs to be extended. I rang a local guy, he came round, took photos, gave us price just for the drawing which we agreed. That was last May-never heard from him since.

We wanted a log burner installing. We got a man round, he only lives up the road. He gave us a quote, something like £2,000-we agreed the work-never heard from him since. That was last September.

We needed the whole downstairs plastering-price agreed, did one days work, said he would ring me.
That was last September-still waiting.

We asked a local firm to draw up plans and quote for a new porch. They had already fitted our new windows so they knew us and that we paid immediately. Yep, you guessed it, still waiting. Err last summer some time.
Window fitters were the worst, one forgot to turn up, one was going to be over this way as he had family here but then his plans changed and one cancelled as his wife had got tickets for a pantomime and he had to babysit the smaller child. All very lovely but ain't gonna get the money coming in is it.

We've asked for fencers, decorators. All totally blasé,

I want a grille or shutter on the back door. I am always worried about being burgled. I rang one company. The conversation went like this.
"Hi, I'd like to get a price for a grille on the back door, can you come round?"
"Well it's not just as simple as that, I need measurements and if you think about it, having a grille on the back door, it's not really going to work it is?"
Call terminated.

I rang another firm, didn't answer the phone
Another went to voicemail

In the end I rang a large company, I would rather use local but guess what? The phone answered
immediately and their brochure arrived first thing this morning.

So want I want to know is, are all the people making so much money they can afford to turn business away? I know if I had my own company I would be striving to get every bit of business I could.
I wouldn't mind but some of these workmen were recommended and I was told they were quiet and needed the work!

In the words of Jim Royale.....Recession, my arse.

How is it where you live?

FIB. X

  1. Hi, I bought my house a year ago and have had much the same experience. We needed a new boiler, about 3 different people were going to get back to us and never did. Same with electrical work, left messages, sent emails no replies. My husband and I have discussed the exact same thing, you think they would be snatching your hands off for the cash. I have noticed however that houses seem to be selling much quicker and there are lots more jobs advertised now so maybe things are improving ???

  2. My OH is self employed (not in any of the trades you have mentioned )and it has been extremely tough and still is.
Its such a shame that you have tried to higher locals and been let down but like in all walks of life the few tarnish the many.

  3. Oh my word, I really thought it was just us! We've been through pretty much the same thing with our house, it makes you wonder how they keep going, it's certainly not how I'd be running my own business ( which I loved to do!) : )

  4. I'm in Lancashire. My electrican was fab - came to look on Friday evening, dropped the written quote off before 9am the following morning and started the job within days. He works alone and is in his 60s. I used a local upvc company for my front door and had such good service we used them for the fascias and gutters. The only one who let us down was the gas fitter. I wanted gas running to the kitchen( we have central heating and a gas point in the lounge, but none in the kitchen). I gave up with him , gave my gas cooker away and stuck with just having a mini oven with 2 rings on top. In hindsight he did me a favour by not turning up!

  5. I've been lucky. Getting repairs to the boiler and the roof, we've asked around and got recommendations. I rang other people for comparison quotes but wasn't so impressed - yes some did seem a bit blasé.

  6. Same here in the United States. I live in southern New Jersey and have a very hard time getting someone to come over and finish work as guaranteed. Waiting on house addition that should have bee completed in a week and yet no structure up yet....VERY FRUSTRATING!!!!

  7. I have always thought that if tradespeople had basic business skills rather than just their trade they would be able to make a better living. Being able to return a phone call or show up on time for instance. We do our own landscaping but needed the landscaper who installed our irrigation system (for the lady who owned our house before us) to move one of the lines. We called him every day for five days. Hubby was mad, wanted to call someone else but in the end he did show up and do it cheaply. Good work, just terrible customer service before the actual work occurred. I hear you!

  8. It astonishes me. I've heard lots of stories like this. Fortunately I was lucky with the plumber I called re a new boiler and he was quick, reasonable and a really nice chap. Same with the carpet fitter, but he is my hairdressers other half so he'd better be! Why is it like that with so many people? :)

How about a joke to cheer us up? :)

Frugal wife says to her Little man: Do you drink beer?
    Little Man: Well, actually, yes
Frugal Wife: How many beers a day?
Little Man: Oh, about 4 tins of John Smiths.
Frugal Wife: How much do you pay for this beer?
Little Man: £3.99/4 pack from ASDA.
(This is where it gets scary !)
Frugal Wife: And how long have you been drinking?
Little Man: About 20 years, I suppose
Frugal Wife: So a beer costs about £1 and you have 4 beers a day which puts your spending each month at around £120. In one year, it would be approximately £1,440 …correct?
Little Man: (thinks for a minute) - Correct
Frugal Wife: If in 1 year you spend £1,440, not accounting for inflation, the past 20 years puts your spending at £28,800, correct?
Little Man: (thinks for two minutes) - Correct
Frugal Wife: Do you know that if you didn’t drink so much beer, that money could have been put in an ISA savings account, and after accounting for compound interest for the past 20 years, you could have now bought a new Toyota Prius?
    .
    Pause.
    .
(Not quite so) Little Man: Darling, do you drink beer?
Frugal Wife: No, of course not.
(No longer a) Little Man: So where’s your bloody Toyota Prius then?
    Have a wonderful Bank Holiday.
    Cheers.... B x

  10. We have been waiting 5-6 weeks for a landscape gardener to get back to us about taking a tree down, I was going to ask him about cutting the hedge too but he obviously doesn't need the money!!

  11. I know what you mean, on Wednesday I phoned a handy man to come and do some jobs for me around the house as I am in the process of catching up with thing. His exact words were 'The jobs you want me to do for you are too small and I am not interested in doing them.' Shock, horror, he was even recommended by a friend. To say I was lost for words would be an understatement. I have since found someone interested in doing the job, hope they turn up.

  12. I was going to blog about a similar thing last week. We've had trouble getting people round, both here and at our old place. We even did what everyone suggests and uses personal recommendations, to no avail. We used people MIL uses and the service was terrible, yet she sings their praises still. I'm starting to think it's me!
