Can you be healthy and frugal?

Dear reader, Firstly here is the list so far of the losing pounds challenge. I am trying to think of a really good name for us all. Any ideas? We now have Pam, Rambler,VC,Katie-Jane,Highlandhearts,Maria,Emma Watts,Miss Piggy bank,Jan,Helen Mortimer,Donna Scott,Welsh Poppy(sorry I missed you) AlisonB43 and Treaders. I have been going through recipe books, old diet magazines and looking for inspiration online for healthy meals and packed lunches. Today I had 2 Weetabix with semi skimmed and granulated sweetener. It looks a bit weird like the stuff in a snow globe and I could just blow it away but it gives me sweetness without the calories.

When I got to work, the bitches (the skinny ones on the other side of the office in the size eight jeans!) had brought in two types of chocolate cookies, the chewy type, and chocolate brownies followed by a coffee cake. "Oh just help yourself" they chirped, in their skinny jeans, high heels and lip gloss. All sweetness and light- I'm not fooled. I stayed well away. I had a cup of tea and for my treat I had an Alpen light bar. The only cereal bar I have found that isn't laden with fat and calories. Try them, nice flavours. I like cherry bakewell. For lunch I had last nights lamb biryani, an apple and a no fat fruit yogurt. (Lidl) I got a bit hungry about 4pm so I had one of those mug shots. The cheese and pasta one. Low fat and it was nice. Takes a while for the pasta to go soft but filled me up.

Tonight I had a jacket potato, half a tin of baked beans and a tiny bit of cheddar. I would usually have had a so lodge of butter, plenty of salt, loads of grated cheese and a dollop of coleslaw. Now I have to admit it was a bit bland so to add flavour I splashed Worcestershire sauce on it, much better. My concern with food in our shops is that the cheapest foods seem to be unhealthy. The crisps, the biscuits, the cheap bread, chips and pizzas. I think you can get an own brand of digestive biscuits for the same price as one orange. Pizzas can be had for one pound and chips 87p for a huge bag of frozen ones. It takes a lot of organisation to be prepared, to have meals ready and to get something healthy on the table especially if you've been at work all day. Who wants to start chopping, peeling and baking after 8 hours plus travelling? Not me! I read on someone blog although I can't recall who, that they cooked a batch of jacket potatoes then froze them ready to get out, heat in microwave, stuff with something lovely and eat. What a great idea. The jacket spud, a wonderful food for cold winter nights. Full of carbs though. Now what's best? Low carbs, high protein (but could play havoc with arteries), low fat, low calorie or a healthy mix of all food types with low fat in mind? I think that's the one I fancy. I love my pasta, potatoes and pulses and I also enjoy meat and fish. I don't fancy eating high protein and I just don't think you can eat loads of cheese and cream and it be good for you. I am just waiting for Big man to replace my scales batteries and I will post my weight. I'm not shy and I know we are all friends and you won't judge me because you are all lovely. I'm sure the small changes I've made so far will make a difference. I am also going to take measurements of top of arms (bingo wing area) top of thighs (the wobbly bit) waist and hip areas. I think that will be a good way to see myself melting. Some of the challenge list are doing brilliantly, some have lost weight already and some are going to join in the New Year. I already have a giveaway arranged with weight loss cooking in mind. I will do the giveaway on Sunday but you must have joined the weight loss challenge and be on the list to enter. So send me your name and I will add you. We are going to do so well!

  1. I agree re all the chopping. On Monday and Tuesday for breakfast I had fruit salad chopped up, chopping, chopping, chopping with yogurt and oats. Then I made my lunch up for work with lots of salad and chickpeas, chopping, chopping, chopping again lol
I had lots of mushrooms so I made mushroom soup for dinner, chopping, chopping again :-) I did sneak a bit of cream into the soup oops.
    Cheers

    1. Hi Maria, why does soup taste better with a splash of cream? I love cream sadly but I only really have it at Chritmas with a tiny bit of pudding.
I like the sound of your breakfast what a good combination of foods. Look out for my post on our weigh in days. Should be good. X

  2. I think you've hit the nail on the head in that it can take more organisation and preparation than anything else. I don't think oven chips or pizza take less time, just less input.

When we started losing weight I tried to prepare for a few days in advance so the chopping was reduced. I'd spin loads of salad, grate carrots, boil eggs etc and have them in the fridge ready to go. Same with evening meals, if the oven was on with one thing I'd roast some veg or whatever so that was ok for the next day.

    1. Exactly. It's the input that counts, you just have to be prepared like you and get stuff in the fridge that can be grabbed when required. I am doing that with jacket potatoes. When I have the oven on I cook a couple then keep them in the fridge. I just take one to work with some baked beans.

  3. Well I'm game to jump in with this losing weight malarkey for the New Year, but I'll be doing it slightly differently than most. After studying lots of diets carefully and partaking of a few, I've found the worst way to lose weight is down the low fat route.

Our bodies NEED fat, it helps them to function, to repair cells to give us energy etc what we don't need is artificially low fat foods, which all have artificial sweeteners or even sugar added to make them palatable, (hence low fat does not mean low calorie) and this then sets off the bodies sugar rush response, damaging our insulin levels for good.

So I'll simply be eating sensible portions of real non-manufactured foods and we'll see how I get on.

There could be a lot of lighter weight Bloggers and readers around by next Summer :-)

    1. I agree with Sue (actually do quite often!) about diet/low fat/low sugar foods. The best way is to cut down on 'junk'/processed and cook your own food. I know this is a bit of a faff, especially know that after a day at the office but it really is the best way. I can vouch for that as I did lose weight that way around a year ago. Whilst I am being seduced back into junk eating in the office, I have managed (without too much trouble) to keep to my new weight. Also, I think it is a really good idea to monitor measurements; I had no scales when I lost my weight, but knew I was losing it as my clothes were so much bigger, which is a wonderful feeling. Good luck to you all, I WILL be joining you after our New Year fun!

    2. Hi to both above,
Alison I have added you to the list with a NY next to you.
Thanks for your advice re fats. Without going into too much detail I have found if I cut out fat things don't happen regularly! Not good.
I like to include the good fats, Brazil nuts, avacado and sometimes a bit of cheese. I often check the labels of so called low fat and as you say they load it with sugars or sweeteners. The health bars and cereal bars are prime culprits of this. I am trying to go for a good mixture of non processed food with plenty of fruit and vegetables. Lots of colours and types.

  4. I had a wander round MFin3 this morning and I will be slurping my way through homemade soup for lunches, oats for breakfast as normal and then a good mix of veg and pulses with the odd bit of meat or fish every now and then. BTW my start weight is 11 stones, I am not too disgusted at that but need/want to drop a stone and do a bit more to tighten things up around the middle. It is a shame that I can not give up sugar in my drinks, I have never used it!

    1. I love homemade soups but sadly big man not so keen. He says they are like baby food! I have to make him a clear soup like a consommé with a bit of chicken floating around in it. Ha ha I know what you mean I also would like to tighten up but for me- everywhere. X

    1. Hello simplesligo how great to have you on board with our weight loss and get fitter plan. I am an expert in picking! They call me the grazer at work.
We all know the way to do it don't we? Your meal plans sound good. It would be great to drop a stone by end of January wouldn't it? I'd be so pleased with myself if I did that. Wishing willpower to you too.

  7. Hi

Count me in. However, I have started my healthy eating regime over 2 weeks ago (I have lost 5 lbs so far).

I am not dieting though. Diets don't work. I am now eating like a normal person, watching portion sizes and moving more. It seems to be working. I agree totally with Sue about the misconception with low fat/diet foods (waves to Sue).

We have a family holiday of a lifetime planned to Florida in May with our two 10 year old daughters and I want to feel good then, or at least better than I do now. I have a long way to go and will only part way on my journey by then. But that's how I am seeing - no quick fixes, but a journey and my body will decide the weight it need to be.

    1. Correct. No quick fixes. Healthy eating is a way of life. I know a few people who did the no eating plans and just drank water and soups and shakes and they paid £68 a week for the privilege. Of course they all lost a huge amount of weight but they all put it back on. It's the long term that counts. I am filling myself up on vegetables, fruits, salads and making my meals heavy in those. I am not depriving myself but I'm being very sensible. I think I forgot what hungry felt like.

  8. I tend to alternate between pre-cooked and frozen meals like bolognese, curry etc, and then freshly prepared there and then. The slow cooker is also great for giving me a nice quick straight-on-the-table meal too - we're having beef stew tomorrow! Good luck with your weight loss - are you planning to try to wean yourself off the chemical filled sweeteners etc as well? I have to confess personally I'd rather use sugar, just less of it!

    1. Hi yes I don't really like the sweeteners and there's a lot of bad press around them. I'm doing step by step. Done the cigarettes, trying to cut out the rubbish so yes I suppose the sweeteners will be included in that, perhaps I could try honey. What do you think?

  9. Can I join the challenge please? I desperately need to lose weight, to help reduce cholesterol and control my diabetes, and as we are struggling to buy food at the moment ( cash flow wise) I may as well use the small portions to kick start my weight loss. I'll post my weight as soon as I can find my scales.

    1. Welcome Bets. I'm sorry to hear of the cash flow and the health matters. I heard walnuts were good as well as porridge oats for cholesterol. Do you take a statin? Or are you doing it with food control alone? The best of luck to you and please do drop in often and let us know how you are. X

  10. Was it really necessary to call the other office girls "bitches"?
It seems like they did a nice thing for most people.
Good on you for doing the weight loss thing!
The Fitblr community on Tumblr are amazing. All about health and not about being skinny.

    1. I don't think there's any harm meant.

Think of the 'Skinny Bitch' cook books etc. It's only a nickname for the thinner than thin girls who eat like mad in public and then most likely spend their evenings drink water and not much else to make up for their 'Oh I can eat anything I like and not put on an ounce' stance during the day!!

      Delete
    2. Ha ha, yes! You should hear what they call me! It's all great humour in our office and they love being the skinny bitches! We on the other side of the office come off far worse.

  11. Just popping in to say have a look at the 5 2diet. Eat more or less what you like for 5 days and only eat 500 calories a day for two Non consecutive days. It really works and is so much easier to stick to. I started it in February reached my goal weight after a few months and now just do one day a week.

  13. Well done today!

Breakfast - porridge with blueberries, yogurt.
Lunch - Thick lentil soup, roll, 2 tangerines.
Mid afternoon - attack of the munchies but managed (only just!) to stave it off with an apple.
Dinner - poached salmon (leftovers from yesterday) vegetable rice, salad. 1 pear.

Need to use up pantry and freezer stuff as we're hoping to move house in a few weeks. There could be some strange food combinations ahead!

i really need to get more exercise too. Used to go for walks much more than I do now but I always find some excuse not to go.

Early to bed tonight with a good book, to keep me out of the pantry.

    Good luck for tomorrow.

    1. Hi bunny,

You are now on the list. I am dreading the scales too. There's only one way to go from now and that's lighter. Are you going to take measurements too? I am, it will give me a good idea of my body hopefully getting smaller.
      Best of luck x
